FIVE RESEARCH THEMES IN ARCHITECTURE

1.     Regenerative Urban Metabolism

Focus: This perspective conceptualizes the city not merely as an assemblage of built fabric, but as a living organism endowed with intrinsic self-regenerative capacities.

Sub-topics: Circular architecture; micro-scale waste-to-energy processing systems; and the design of net-positive buildings that actively contribute to the ecological health of their surrounding environment.

Relevance: This framework is particularly pertinent to addressing Jakarta's urban density challenges, exploring how building interventions can meaningfully contribute to the restoration of air and water quality.

2.     High-Tech Vernacular: Re-engineering Local Wisdom

Focus: This theme seeks to synthesize Indonesia's indigenous architectural principles with advanced digital technologies as a strategic response to the climate crisis.

Sub-topics: The technological modernization of bamboo and timber structures; the adaptation of stilt-house typologies in response to sea-level rise; and the deployment of algorithmic design methodologies to optimize the passive ventilation strategies characteristic of the Nusantara architectural tradition.

Relevance: This approach foregrounds local cultural identity while simultaneously offering intelligent, technically robust, and sustainable design solutions.

3.     Smart Resilience & Digital Twin Cities

Focus: This theme examines the utilization of data-driven platforms and digital simulation tools to predict and mitigate the impacts of climate-induced hazards on the built environment.

Sub-topics: The implementation of Building Information Modeling (BIM) for energy performance optimization; the application of Digital Twin technology in urban flood simulation; and the development of adaptive smart building control systems responsive to extreme temperature fluctuations.

Relevance: This research aligns with the prevailing digitalization trends within the construction sector and addresses the critical need for evidence-based disaster mitigation strategies.  

4.     Biophilic Urbanism: Bridging the Grey and Green

Focus: This theme investigates the integration of natural elements into architectural design and public space planning as a strategy to mitigate the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect.

 Sub-topics: Vertical greening systems; the incorporation of ecological corridors within high-density residential design; and the impact of biophilic design interventions on urban dwellers' mental well-being amid the climate crisis.

 Relevance: This research directly responds to the challenge of extreme heat in Jakarta by proposing architectural solutions that are both aesthetically compelling and functionally effective.

5.     Equity in Climate-Responsive Design

Focus: This theme addresses the imperative of ensuring that climate-responsive architectural innovations are accessible across all socioeconomic strata, including informal settlements.

Sub-topics: The design of affordable, low-emission vertical housing; inclusive design strategies targeting vulnerable populations in the face of climate-related disasters; and the critical role of architects in advancing environmental justice.

Relevance: This research introduces an ethical and socially grounded dimension to the architectural discourse, ensuring that green building technologies are not confined to luxury developments but are democratized for broader societal benefit.
